About Peter Madan - Cellist
G.R.S.M.‬ (Hons), L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., A.R.C.O.‬

  • ‪Peter Madan was born in England, and started playing the cello at 5 years old. He was educated at Charterhouse with a music scholarship, and then studied cello with Christopher Bunting at the Royal College of Music in London, where he obtained the G.R.S.M. degree with first class honours, and three instrumental diplomas: 
  • LRAM in Cello Performance, 
  • ARCM in Piano teaching, and the 
  • ARCO Organ diploma.                                             

  • During his time at the Royal College, he was awarded many prizes for solo performance, chamber music and academic achievement, including a Leverhulme scholarship and the coveted Raymond Ffennel prize for excellence in academic studies.

  •   In 1985, he was awarded a D.A.A.D. German government scholarship for further post-graduate study with Professor Johannes Goritzki in Düsseldorf, Germany.‬‬ 

  •  Since 1986, Peter has been based in both the UK and France, and performs regularly as principal cellist with some of the finest French symphonic and opera orchestras, including the: 
  • Orchestre National de Lyon, 
  • Opéra National de Lyon, 
  • Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille.
  • Orchestre National de Montpellier, and the 
  • Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.‬

  • He has made several recordings for Virgin classics, Destiny records, Actes Sud, Long Road Records, Chandos and Erato labels, as well as many television and live radio broadcasts as principal cello, in music ranging from Baroque Continuo playing to the most contemporary classical music.
  •  In Great Britain, Peter has performed as guest principal cello with the:- 
  •  Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, 
  •  BBC Concert Orchestra,
  •  Scottish Chamber Orchestra, 
  •  Scottish Opera 
  •  Orchestra of Welsh National Opera,and
  •  Opera North,                                                                         and has played front-desk cello with the
  •  Philharmonia orchestra, 
  •  Hallé Orchestra, and the 
  •  Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.‬                                     
  • Peter is also very active examining for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, on all three of their practical panels (Diplomas/Graded Exams, and Jazz), and is called upon repeatedly to present seminars for the Board across the whole world.

Peter studied conducting with Dr. Norman Del Mar and Christopher Adey in London at the Royal College of Music and made his conducting début at St. John's Smith Square in London with the New London Chamber Orchestra, of which he was principal conductor from 1983-1985. ‪

Greatly appreciated as an all round musician, he has conducted orchestras in England, France and Germany, and with a very close relationship with the Orchestre de Cannes in the South of France for many years.

Much of his work has been involved with directing chamber orchestras, but Peter is also greatly appreciated for his large-scale symphonic works, which have included the Brahms' Symphonies, Tschaikovsky - Romeo and Juliet Overture, Bartok - Miraculous Mandarin, Debussy - Images, Ravel - La Valse, Beethoven, Mozart, Bernstein, to name a few, ..............and the list goes on !

With a vast experience in orchestral music, Peter is as much at home with the symphonic repertoire as he is with opera, and has performed on the international stage with some of the worlds’ finest singers and instrumentalists, including Placido Domingo, Felicity Lott, Katia Ricciarelli, Roberto Alagna, Rolando Villazon, Patricia Ciofi, Robert Tear, Isaac Stern, Evgeny Kissin, Yefim Bronfman, Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin, Paul Tortelier, Mtislav Rostropovich, Victoria Mullova, Natalia Gutman.........................etc

An accomplished pianist, Peter has given recitals with the late Christopher Bunting in Oxford, and accompanied the cellist David Cohen in concert for the Philharmonia Orchestra.
